Succulents are some of the easiest plants to care for, but they still need a little attention to stay healthy and beautiful. Whether you’re a new plant parent or a seasoned succulent lover, these top 10 care tips will help you keep your succulents thriving all year long!
1. Use the Right Soil
Succulents need fast-draining soil to prevent root rot. Use a cactus or succulent mix, or make your own by adding sand or perlite to regular potting soil.
2. Choose Pots with Drainage Holes
Water can easily build up in a pot without drainage, causing the roots to rot. Always use pots with holes at the bottom to allow excess water to escape.
3. Water Sparingly
One of the biggest mistakes people make is overwatering. Only water when the soil is completely dry—this could be every 1–2 weeks, depending on the climate and season.
4. Provide Plenty of Sunlight
Succulents love bright, indirect sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. If you’re keeping them indoors, place them near a sunny window. If your home lacks natural light, consider using a grow light.
5. Avoid Overcrowding
Give your succulents space to breathe! Overcrowding can trap moisture and reduce airflow, which may lead to rot or mold growth.
6. Rotate Your Succulents
If your succulents start leaning toward the light, it means they need more even exposure. Rotate them every few days to keep them growing straight and balanced.
7. Keep Temperature and Humidity in Check
Succulents thrive in temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and prefer low humidity. Avoid placing them near cold drafts, heaters, or air conditioners.
8. Fertilize Occasionally
Succulents don’t need a lot of fertilizer, but a light feeding during the growing season (spring and summer) can help them flourish. Use a diluted succulent fertilizer once a month.
9. Remove Dead Leaves and Pests
Regularly clean up dead leaves at the base of your succulent to prevent pests like gnats or mealybugs from settling in. If you notice pests, wipe the leaves with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.
10. Repot When Necessary
If your succulent outgrows its pot or the soil looks too compacted, it’s time for a new home! Repot your plant every 1–2 years to give the roots more space and refresh the soil.
