Summer is the season when succulents love to show off their best colors and fastest growth—but the heat can also bring challenges. Whether your succulents are indoors or out, knowing how to care for them during the warmer months is essential for their health and longevity.
At SD Succulent Growers, we grow happy, healthy plants under the California sun—and we’re here to share our top tips for summer succulent care!
🌞 1. Adjust Sun Exposure
Succulents love sunlight, but too much intense afternoon sun can scorch their leaves.
- Gradually increase sun exposure if moving your plant outside.
- Provide shade during the hottest part of the day, especially between 12–4 PM.
- Look for signs of sunburn like white, yellow, or brown patches on the leaves.
💦 2. Water Smarter, Not More
Summer doesn’t mean your succulents need constant watering. In fact, overwatering is still the #1 way to kill a succulent.
- Wait until the soil is completely dry before watering.
- Water deeply, allowing excess to drain out of the bottom.
- Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day—early morning is best.
🪴 3. Use Well-Draining Soil
Succulents hate wet feet, especially in warm weather. Make sure you’re using a succulent or cactus mix that drains fast.
Tip: Add perlite or coarse sand to regular soil to improve drainage.
🍃 4. Increase Air Circulation
Humidity and heat can create mold or rot. Place your succulents where there’s plenty of airflow—especially if they’re clustered together.
Use a small fan indoors or move them to breezy spots outside for better ventilation.
🏡 5. Know When to Bring Them In
If temps rise above 95°F (35°C), especially for indoor varieties or delicate types like Echeveria, consider moving them into a cooler, shadier spot.
Too much heat can stress the plant, even if it’s sun-loving.
🐜 6. Keep an Eye Out for Pests
Warm weather invites mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Check under the leaves and around the base regularly.
Use neem oil or insecticidal soap if you spot any uninvited guests.
🌵 7. Feed Lightly
Summer is a growing season for succulents, so a little boost can help:
- Use a diluted succulent fertilizer once a month.
- Avoid overfeeding—it’s better to underdo it than overdo it.
